Tip-11: How to Minimize Withdrawals After You Stop Smoking Cigarettes
My name is Joseph Giove. I’m a biomedical engineer and a clinical hypnotist. I’ve helped thousands of people stop smoking over the last twenty five years. I created this video series to help you become free of the habit an addiction of smoking cigarettes.
How to minimize withdrawals after you quit smoking? The first part is understanding that a withdrawal after you stop smoking does not mean that your body wants more nicotine. As I mentioned in another video, you never have and you never will ever crave a cigarette; you are craving what smoking has stolen from your body.
So a withdrawal is an impulse from your body to get back to homeostasis, back to internal balance. Your body is giving you an impulse for B vitamins; nervous system balance; numerous minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium; it is asking for detoxification. So drink lots of water, sweat, breathe deep, smooth, and rhythmic. Breathe deeper, exhaling longer that you normally would.
All of these processes become part of quickly recovering from nicotine addiction and minimizing any withdrawals. As I keep mentioning: smoking is both a habit and an addiction, so often the habit is confused with an urge to smoke a cigarette. But it is just a habit, it’s the time of the day, it’s the thing that you are doing, getting in the car, waking up, having your coffee. These are the habit not the nicotine calling to you. So be deliberate about changing the habit as well.
One last note is that often the withdrawal is a false association created by this body change, which creates low blood sugar. So another way to minimize withdrawal is to snack on high protein, low fat, low carb foods. Probably the best would be something like salmon jerky, beef jerky, etc. I’m not talking about making a meal out of it; just a bite of jerky once an hour or every other hour or so.
Avoid nuts, they are protein, but they are also loaded with fat. You want to set the tone for your nervous system and your endocrine system after you quit, to be clean, clear and balanced. Move forward without the dependency on nicotine or food or other replacements.
